Prof. Badri Narayan Tiwari serves as Vice Chancellor of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), a deemed university under India's Ministry of Education. A renowned social historian and cultural anthropologist, he bridges academic rigor with public intellectualism through scholarship on democracy, marginality, and cultural production in Indian contexts.
He earned his M.A. in Modern History and PhD from the University of Allahabad, Prayagraj.
His research critically examines power dynamics in democratic systems, focusing on caste exclusion, Dalit mobilization, migration's emotional economies, and gendered violence. Work integrates indigenous knowledge frameworks with contemporary social theory, frequently disseminated through 150+ op-eds in The Hindu, Indian Express, and Hindi dailies like Amar Ujala.
Scientific Recognition:
- Sahitya Akademi award for literary contributions in English and Hindi
Prof. Tiwari has taught at Jawaharlal Nehru University (M.Phil courses on discrimination), National University of Singapore (Religion/Culture/Politics), and Anton de Kom University (Suriname). He led 15 major projects funded by Tata Trusts, Ford Foundation, ICSSR, and Netherlands-based institutes including Royal Tropical Institute, focusing on marginalized communities and policy impacts.
