Babu Guda

Babu Guda is a tenured Professor and Vice Chair for Bioinformatics Research & Training in the UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Anatomy. He also serves as the Chief Bioinformatics & Research Computing Officer at the UNMC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Founding Director of the UNMC Bioinformatics & Systems Biology Core, and Co-Director of the UNO & UNMC Center for Biomedical Informatics Research & Innovation. His research focuses on developing computational tools for genomic and imaging data analysis, addressing questions in cancer biology, neuroscience, precision medicine, and microbiome studies.

Education:

• PhD in Molecular Biology, Auburn University
• Postdoctoral Training: Computational Biology (University of California, San Diego) and Molecular Biology/Computer Science (Iowa State University)
• MSc and BSc in Agricultural Sciences from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University, India

Research Interests: Application of machine learning and deep learning to genomic big data, multi-omics integration, cancer genomics, microbiome analysis, and precision medicine. His work bridges computational methods with biological questions to advance translational research.

Publications: Over 150 peer-reviewed articles since 2007, with recent focus on radiation injury biomarkers, opioid effects on neurodevelopment, and fusion gene prediction tools like ChimeRScope.

Grants & Mentoring: Over $10M in NIH/NSF funding since 2008. Mentored 15 PhD students and 14 postdocs, contributing to training the next generation of computational biologists.

Labs & Initiatives: Directs the Great Plains IDeA-CTR Biomedical Informatics Core and leads the SCORCH consortium for opioid-HIV research. Committed to advancing bioinformatics infrastructure and collaborative research.
