Aïcha Hessler-Wyser is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), affiliated with the School of Engineering and the Photovoltaic and Electronic Thin Film Laboratory (PV-LAB). She also holds a teaching position in the SMX-ENS department. Her work spans both research and education in materials science, with a strong emphasis on electron microscopy techniques and photovoltaic materials.
Her research focuses on the microstructural study of materials and interfaces in photovoltaic devices, with expertise in transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM). She serves as deputy director of the Photovoltaic and Electronic Thin Film Laboratory and has published extensively on topics including TiO2 photocatalysis, nanomaterials for energy applications, metal-oxide interfaces, and in situ characterization techniques. Her publications reveal a consistent focus on materials characterization, particularly using advanced electron microscopy methods to study structural and chemical properties at the nanoscale.
Dr. Hessler-Wyser has supervised numerous doctoral students at EPFL, including Deillon Léa, Faes Antonin, Hain Caroline, and others, primarily in the fields of materials science and physics. Her teaching includes theoretical and practical instruction in transmission and scanning electron microscopy, as well as supervision of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students.
Her recent publications demonstrate continued activity in the field, with research spanning photovoltaics, catalysis, and advanced materials characterization. The trend in her work shows a progression from fundamental materials characterization to applied research in energy conversion and environmental technologies, with increasing focus on in situ and operando characterization techniques.
She has contributed to significant advancements in understanding materials for energy applications, particularly in photovoltaics and solid oxide fuel cells, with publications in high-impact journals across materials science, chemistry, and engineering disciplines.
