Ayse Caglar is University Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna since 2011 and a Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), Vienna since 2018. She also serves as Scholar of Excellence at Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration at Toronto Metropolitan University. Previously, she was a professor at Central European University, Budapest and held a Minerva Research Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity.
Dr. Caglar received her PhD in anthropology from McGill University (1995) and completed her habilitation in anthropology and sociology at the Free University of Berlin (2004). She is Vice President of the International Institute of Sociology and a member of Academia Europaea and the Science Academy Society of Turkey. Her research focuses on migration, displacement, and urban restructuring within global political economy frameworks.
Her recent publications include the co-edited volume Sites of Statelessness: Laws, Cities, Seas (2024) and co-authored Migrants & City-Making: Dispossession, Displacement, and Urban Regeneration (2018). Her research demonstrates consistent engagement with multiscalar analysis of migration processes and their intersections with urban governance, displacement, and capital restructuring.
Dr. Caglar directs the Europe-Asia Research Platform on Forced Migration at IWM and serves as deputy speaker and co-PI of the Research Platform The Challenge of Urban Futures: Governing the Complexities in European Cities at the University of Vienna. She has secured significant funding including Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships and Open Society Foundation grants for her work on migration and urban justice.
As a dedicated mentor, she supervises numerous doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers working on migration, displacement, and urban studies. Her leadership extends to major collaborative projects examining Ukrainian displacement in Vienna, European-Asian migration connections, and global forced migration governance.
