Arjin Tas is a Research Fellow at the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology, University of Vienna, within the Faculty of Social Sciences. She holds a BA in Sociology from Bogazici University (2019) and an MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University (2022). Her work focuses on urban destruction, counterinsurgency strategies, and forced displacement in Southeastern Turkey, particularly in Diyarbakir. Her doctoral research examines the normalization of counterinsurgency practices in urban policies targeting Kurdish communities, supported by the sowi:docs Fellowship (2022).
Her research integrates ethnographic methods to analyze how state-driven urban restructuring weaponizes displacement and redevelopment. Key themes include accumulation by dispossession, urban warfare legacies, and the socio-political implications of labeling spaces as 'risky.' Her 2023 publication in The Commentaries explores these dynamics through the Sur district case study.
