Aynne Johnston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dramatic Arts Education at Queen’s University's Faculty of Education. She co-coordinates the Artist-in-Community Education Program, which trains professional arts educators for careers in schools and workplaces. Her work integrates educational and artistic expertise, focusing on adult learners and strategies for classroom and workplace innovation.
Aynne holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities (BAH), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), and Master of Education (M.Ed.) from Queen’s University. She has also studied in London, UK, at the Arvon Foundation in Yorkshire, and with the Lincoln Institute, enriching her interdisciplinary background.
Her research and teaching interests emphasize creativity, innovation, and arts-based pedagogies. She explores strategies for success coaching, integrating the arts into education to foster new possibilities in learning environments. Her work has incorporated virtual educational components, such as Second Life, into her creative and pedagogical practices, reflecting a commitment to evolving educational technologies. She also focuses on dramatic arts education and community-based learning initiatives.
In addition to academic work, Aynne has authored a children's book (Milli Yawn's Adventure) and is developing a limited series on Tudor England. She previously contributed as a co-editing expert to The Arts as Meaning Makers by Claudia Cornett and Katharine Smithrim, and performed in the 2011 solo concert Unexpected Songs.
Aynne's career includes over 12 years of post-secondary teaching, coaching teacher candidates, and training professionals. Her past collaborations with the Stratford Festival Theatre and Byron House Publishing highlight her interdisciplinary approach. She also maintains a focus on future projects, including the Tudor England book series.
She leads the Artist-in-Community Education Program, a unique initiative at Queen’s that bridges professional arts practice with educational certification. This program reflects her dedication to blending artistic creation with pedagogical innovation.
