Ayman Hamouda is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Fisch College of Pharmacy, University of Texas at Tyler. His academic journey includes roles as Assistant Professor at Texas A&M Health Sciences Center (2013–2018), Research Fellow and Instructor at Harvard Medical School (2007–2013), and Instructor at Al-Azhar University (1998–2002). He holds a BPharm from Al-Azhar University (1998), and a PhD in Pharmacology and Neuroscience from Texas Tech University (2007).
His research focuses on the structure and pharmacology of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), targeting neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, nicotine addiction, and pain management. Current projects involve developing nAChR positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) for therapeutic applications. He leads a lab using biophysical, electrophysiological, and in vivo animal models to advance drug discovery.
Hamouda has secured significant funding, including NIH grants and the UT System Rising STARs Award. His awards include the Fulbright Scholarship and recognition for graduate research excellence. He actively contributes to academic governance as a grant reviewer for NIH, AHA, and AACP, and serves as a journal reviewer for Frontiers in Neuroscience and Journal of Biological Chemistry.
