Prof. Winkelmann's research spans multiple critical areas in business information systems. His primary focus is on retail information systems, with significant contributions to couponing systems, POS technology, and sales forecasting. He has extensively studied ERP systems implementation, particularly in small and medium enterprises, examining both technical and organizational dimensions. His work on business process modeling, especially in the banking sector, has pioneered innovative approaches for semantic business process modeling languages. Additional research interests include e-commerce usability, data quality management, and the strategic implications of information systems in retail environments, consistently bridging theoretical frameworks with practical business applications.
His recent publications (2010-2013) demonstrate a strong focus on the intersection of business processes and information systems, with particular attention to regulatory influences on management information systems through contingency theory perspectives. There's a notable emphasis on domain-specific semantic business process modeling, especially in specialized sectors like banking. His research also explores the practical implementation challenges of ERP systems and the usability aspects of e-commerce platforms, revealing a consistent thread of applying theoretical frameworks to solve practical business problems across multiple industry sectors.
Prof. Winkelmann has been actively involved in several significant research projects, including the "Design of replenishment systems" project funded by Remira GmbH (2011-2012), which focused on identifying, evaluating, and prototyping new methods for demand forecasting. He also led the "Software-based POS-Couponing" project (2005-2006), examining couponing systems in German retail. As a board member and Managing Director of the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) from 2004-2009, he contributed to numerous collaborative research initiatives. His founding role in xdot GmbH (2000-2005) further demonstrates his commitment to translating academic research into practical business solutions.
Prof. Winkelmann has been associated with the Chair of Information Systems and Information Management at the University of Münster. Previously, he was closely involved with the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS), where he served as a board member and Managing Director from 2004-2009. His research collaborations span multiple institutions and industry partners, particularly in the retail and banking sectors.
