Avery Kolers is Professor and Chairperson of Philosophy at the University of Louisville's College of Arts and Sciences. He serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Philosophy and sits on the editorial board of Political Philosophy. As the Central APA representative for the North American Society for Social Philosophy, he maintains active professional engagement in philosophical discourse.
He earned his PhD from the University of Arizona (1995-2000) and has proficiency in Latin American Spanish (reading, writing, speaking).
Kolers' research spans Social & Political Philosophy and Applied Ethics, with specialized focus on territorial rights, solidarity theory, and the philosophy of sports and games. His work examines ethical behavior as embodied skill and explores how games create sociability frameworks transferable to everyday life. His publications consistently bridge theoretical frameworks with practical applications across political, environmental, and ethical domains.
Recent publications demonstrate strong interdisciplinary engagement, particularly in environmental justice, feminist critique, bioethics, and democratic theory. His work frequently employs concepts of solidarity across diverse contexts including healthcare, environmental racism, and territorial disputes, while maintaining philosophical rigor in examining collective action and moral responsibility.
He has secured research funding including:
- "Pursuing Excellence in Ethical Care: A Partnership to Support Clinical Ethics Consultation and Education" (Norton Healthcare Community Trust, 2022-2025)
- "Love Among the Ruins: A Production of Plato's Symposium" (Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, 2020-2021)
