Autumn Fiester is Associate Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Policy and serves as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She is the Faculty Program Director for the Master of Bioethics (MBE) and Master of Science in Medical Ethics (MSME) degrees, and Director of the Penn Program in Clinical Conflict Management, which promotes conflict resolution training for clinical providers and ethics consultants.
Dr. Fiester received her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, an AM in Sociology from Harvard University, and a BA/MA in Political & Social Theory from Bucknell University. Her educational background provides a strong foundation for her interdisciplinary work at the intersection of ethics, sociology, and healthcare policy.
Her primary research interests focus on clinical ethics, clinical conflict management, LGBT bioethics, and medical ethics education. She has developed innovative approaches to handling difficult patient situations through mediation techniques and the "Ladder of Inference" framework. Her work emphasizes values pluralism and reducing moral distress among healthcare providers through better understanding of ethical frameworks.
Dr. Fiester has been recognized with the University of Pennsylvania's Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, highlighting her excellence in education. She has conducted workshops in conflict management throughout the United States and internationally, including projects in Tanzania, the EU, the UAE, Singapore, and Japan.
As Academic Conflict Management Consultant in the School of Arts and Sciences, she works with academic units on strategic vision, improved communication, mediation, and organizational development. Her leadership extends to directing comprehensive bioethics education programs that prepare students for complex ethical challenges in healthcare settings.
