Audun Engelstad is a Professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of Inland Norway, affiliated with the Faculty of Film, Television and Games and the Department of Television Production and Studies – The TV-School. He holds a MA in Comparative Literature and a PhD in Film and Media Studies from the University of Oslo (2006), with additional research experience at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on narratology, genre studies (particularly film noir and melodrama), adaptation analysis, and production studies. Engelstad has led projects like the Norwegian Research Council-funded 'Success in Film and Television Industries' (Sifti) and served as editor for the Journal of Scandinavian Cinema and president of the Norwegian Media Scholars Society.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on narrative theory, Nordic cinema, film industries, and genre studies at both bachelor and master levels. He co-leads research groups BAM! – Industry Studies in Audovisiual Media and DocLab. Recent publications explore war narratives in media memory culture, Norwegian television industry dynamics, and the intersection of high-end TV series with national identity. Engelstad’s work bridges academic research with industry insights, emphasizing both theoretical and applied perspectives in audiovisual media studies.
