Dr. Astrid Lassila Smith serves as a full-time Assistant Professor in the College of Science and Humanities at Husson University, joining the faculty in fall 2018. A lifelong Bangor area resident, she returned to her hometown of Orono after completing her academic training.
Educational background:
- BA in Anthropology, University of Massachusetts Amherst
- PhD in Anthropology of Education, Teachers College, Columbia University
Her research centers on how immigration status, race, gender, and social class intersect to shape educational access and opportunity in the United States. Her dissertation specifically examined refugee and asylum seeker experiences pursuing upward mobility through higher education in Maine, establishing foundations for her ongoing work in educational equity and marginalized populations.
Dr. Smith maintains active contributions to anthropological research on education systems while engaging with local Maine communities through her academic role.
