Astrid Blome is the Director of the Institute for Newspaper Research in Dortmund, a position she has held since 2016. She earned her doctorate from the University of Bremen and completed her habilitation (post-doctoral qualification) in Modern History at the University of Hamburg. Her academic background includes roles as a research associate at the Institute for German Press Research, lecturer, and substitute professor at the University of Bremen, as well as a curator at the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz.
Her research explores interdisciplinary themes including Early Modern History, Media History, and Regional Identity. She investigates the evolution of communication systems, the sociocultural impact of newspapers, and knowledge dissemination across historical periods. Recent work emphasizes digital humanities, media trust, and the transformation of journalism.
Blome actively contributes to several academic initiatives: she co-edits the Dortmander Beiträge zur Zeitungsforschung and Jahrbuch für Kommunikationsgeschichte book series, mentors early-career scholars through the Research Academy Ruhr's mentoring³ program, and leads a DFG-funded project (2019-2021) digitizing the historical Kölnische Zeitung.
She holds leadership roles in multiple scholarly associations, including the Society for German Press Research (executive board), Historical Society of Dortmund (board member), and the Microfilm Archive of the German-Language Press (executive board).
