Dr. Assaad Taoum is a Senior Lecturer in Civil & Structural Engineering at the University of Tasmania, affiliated with the School of Engineering and actively contributing to the Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood (CSAW). His work focuses on integrating sustainable timber practices into modern construction, particularly through the development of engineered wood products from Tasmanian plantation hardwoods.
Research Interests include structural engineering, timber product innovation, and construction materials. His studies emphasize cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam beams, and low-density hardwood flooring, with a strong focus on environmental and mechanical properties.
Teaching Expertise spans Civil Engineering Materials, Computer Aided Design, Project Management, and Timber Structures. He supervises multiple doctoral students working on projects related to optimal log selection, indoor air quality impacts, and structural performance of timber panels.
Current Projects involve collaborations with industry partners like AFWI and Liberty Bell Bay, exploring the reuse of industrial waste and strength prediction in softwood grading. These initiatives aim to enhance processing efficiency and sustainable practices in timber construction.
