Anders Olsson is a Professor of Structural Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Linnaeus University, where he conducts research, supervision, teaching, and course development. He also serves as a teacher representative on the university board and undertakes various expert assignments. Dr. Olsson earned his PhD in Structural Mechanics from Lund University of Technology in 2003 following a Master of Science in Civil Engineering.
Professor Olsson's research focuses on computational models for analyzing wood materials and predicting properties such as stiffness and strength in wood-based components including glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT). His work combines numerical methods with experimental techniques including optical scanning, X-ray examinations, computed tomography, and digital image analysis. He leads several research groups: Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), Forestry Wood and Building Technologies, Strength Grading of Timber, and the Linnaeus University Centre for Competitive Timber Structures.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong integration of artificial intelligence with traditional wood science, particularly in detecting wood features like knots, fiber orientation, and pith location. The research trends show progression from fundamental wood characterization toward practical applications in construction engineering, with increasing use of machine learning techniques for wood analysis.
Professor Olsson has been actively involved in numerous research projects including detection of knots and fiber orientation in wood, improving competitiveness of CLT-based building systems, CT scanning of structural timber, strength grading methodologies, and sustainable structural engineering initiatives. His work frequently involves collaboration with industry partners seeking to apply research findings to improve production opportunities.
His laboratory work employs sophisticated techniques for analyzing wood at micro and macro levels, with applications in improving construction materials and methods. The research environment he leads bridges fundamental understanding of wood properties with practical applications in the construction industry, contributing to sustainable building solutions.
