Ashwin Kumar serves as Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering, holding a triple appointment across Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science departments. He is additionally honored as a Chancellor Faculty Fellow and maintains a strategic affiliation with the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE) under Bennett Landman's collaboration.
His academic foundation includes:
- B.S. in Computer Science and Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University
- M.S. in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University
Professor Kumar's research pioneers medical image processing and quantitative MRI through the Medical-image Analysis and Statistical Interpretation Lab (MASI). His team develops advanced statistical frameworks that transform raw imaging data into clinically interpretable metrics, with particular emphasis on neurological applications. This work bridges computational neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and clinical medicine to enhance diagnostic precision.
As a VISE Affiliate, he actively participates in engineering-surgery integration projects, evidenced by recent involvement in NIH grant writing initiatives (June 2022) and workshop presentations (April 2023). His leadership in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering drives interdisciplinary curriculum development that prepares students for careers at the medicine-technology frontier.
The MASI Lab provides graduate researchers with unique opportunities to develop imaging biomarkers through hands-on collaboration with Vanderbilt Medical Center clinicians. Students gain expertise in both computational methodology and clinical translation within Vanderbilt's integrated academic health system, positioning them for impactful careers in medical technology innovation.
