Dr Ashraf Zarkan serves as a Transition To Independence Fellow at the Department of Genetics, University of Cambridge, within the School of the Biological Sciences, where he leads the Zarkan Group and supervises PhD students including Keiran Abbott.
His academic credentials comprise:
- BSc in Pharmacy
- MSc in Medical Microbiology
- PhD in Biochemistry (2012-2016, University of Cambridge)
Research focuses on Microbial genetics and Antimicrobial resistance, investigating genetic mechanisms of bacterial adaptation and resistance evolution to address critical public health threats from drug-resistant pathogens through fundamental and translational approaches.
He holds the Transition To Independence Fellowship funded by the Rosetrees Trust, Isaac Newton Trust, and School of Biological Sciences.
As group leader, Dr Zarkan mentors PhD candidates and directs research initiatives within the Department of Genetics, advancing understanding of microbial systems and resistance mechanisms through collaborative scientific inquiry.
