Ashon Crawley is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia. His work explores intersections of performance, blackness, queerness, and spirituality. He authored Blackpentecostal Breath: The Aesthetics of Possibility (2017) and The Lonely Letters (2021), with ongoing projects on black social life, the Hammond B3 organ in black church contexts, and sexuality.
He is founder of otherwise arts lab, an experimental arts space, and holds fellowships from MacDowell Colony and the New City Arts Initiative. His creative and scholarly work has been exhibited at venues like the California African American Museum and Second Street Gallery.
