Ashley Mattison

Ashley Mattison is an Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at Oklahoma State University, where she has been employed since August 2023. Prior to this position, she served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Central Oklahoma (August 2022 - May 2023) and as an Assistant Professor/Lead Instructor at Oklahoma State University Oklahoma City (July 2019 - August 2022).

Dr. Mattison's educational background includes:

• Ph.D. in Genetics from Texas A&M University (August 2011 - August 2017)
• B.S. in Genetics from Clemson University (August 2007 - May 2011)

Her research focuses primarily on K-12 STEM education, with additional interests in science, technology and engineering curriculum and pedagogy, higher education, and biochemistry and cell biology. Dr. Mattison's work bridges educational theory with practical application in biochemistry, emphasizing effective teaching methodologies for complex scientific concepts. She has developed innovative laboratory experiments that integrate chemical and biological techniques to enhance student learning experiences.

Dr. Mattison's scholarly publications demonstrate a progression from fundamental biochemical research to educational applications. Her earlier work focused on plant genetics and genomics, particularly in Sorghum bicolor, while her more recent work centers on biochemistry education and K-12 STEM outreach initiatives.

Dr. Mattison is actively involved in service and outreach, including judging at The Great Plains Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) scheduled for February 2025.

As an educator, Dr. Mattison teaches a variety of courses including Survey of Biochemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Nucleic Acids and Protein Synthesis, and undergraduate research courses. She has developed specialized laboratory experiments that provide students with hands-on experience in mass spectrometry, DNA analysis, metabolic assays, kinetic assays, and protein purification.
