Ashish Arora is the Senior Associate Dean for Strategy and Rex D. Adams Professor of Business Administration at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. His academic career includes roles as the H. John Heinz Professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School until 2009, and visiting professorships at institutions such as Scuola Sant'Anna (Pisa) and Bocconi University (Milan). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University (1992).
Arora's research focuses on the economics of technology and innovation, including intellectual property rights, emerging economies' tech industries, and entrepreneurial strategy. Key areas include software and biotechnology innovation, corporate R&D dynamics, and the role of patents in fostering startups. His work emphasizes the interplay between public science and corporate innovation, and the structural shifts in American innovation ecosystems.
He has held editorial roles for journals like Management Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Research Policy. His consulting engagements span entities like the National Science Foundation, Intel Capital, and Tata Consultancy Services. Arora has advised startups such as SCA Technologies and served on panels for the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Academy of Sciences.
His teaching includes courses on entrepreneurial strategy for innovation ventures and emerging markets strategy. Current research explores intellectual property management in corporations and innovation-based entrepreneurship.
