Ashby Butnor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Colorado State University. She holds a PhD in comparative philosophy from the University of Hawai'i, Mānoa, with emphases in East Asian philosophies and cross-cultural ethics, and a graduate certificate in interdisciplinary feminist studies. Her research focuses on embodied knowing, moral cultivation, and ethical epistemology, drawing on Buddhist philosophy, feminist theory, phenomenology, and enactive cognitive science. She co-edited Asian and Feminist Philosophies in Dialogue: Liberating Traditions (2014), which established the field of feminist comparative philosophy.
Her teaching and administrative roles include directing communications initiatives and designing courses such as IU 174B: Happiness and PHIL 360: Topics in Asian Philosophy (Zen). She has extensive experience in student success programs, including global education and core curriculum development. Recent research explores intersections of epistemic injustice and fusion philosophy.
