Ashanti Shih (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of History at Vassar College, affiliated with Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, and the Women, Feminist, and Queer Studies Program. She joined Vassar in 2022. Her research bridges race, indigeneity, and environmental history, focusing on colonial legacies in Pacific and American West contexts.
Education:
- B.A. in History and Art Practice, University of California, Berkeley (2011)
- Ph.D. in History, Yale University (2019)
Research Interests: Shih explores Asian American environmental knowledge systems, settler colonialism, and the historical intersections of science, empire, and ecology. Her recent 2023 Sinnott Award supports research on colonial histories of the Arboretum’s plant collections from North America and East Asia.
