Asad Haider is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics at York University, part of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in the History of Consciousness from UC Santa Cruz (2018), a degree in Cultural Criticism and Theory from Cornell University, and postdoctoral fellowships at Penn State University and a visiting position at The New School for Social Research. His work bridges Marxist theory, social movements, and identity politics, with a focus on analyzing political concepts as interventions in historical contexts.
Central to his research is the relationship between social structures and political action, challenging traditional Marxist and identity-based frameworks. He has authored Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump, a widely debated book exploring the genealogy of identity politics and its intersection with Black liberation movements. His writing spans academic journals like History of the Present and Radical Philosophy, as well as popular platforms such as The Baffler and n+1.
Haider’s current research examines revolutions and national liberation struggles (French, Haitian, Russian, Chinese) to theorize emancipation as a dynamic process rather than a fixed concept. He has lectured globally, including in Germany, Brazil, China, and the U.S., emphasizing the interplay between theory and practice in political movements.
