Aryan Karimi is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Arts, and a core faculty member in the Science and Technology Studies program. He is also affiliated with the Centre for Migration Studies at UBC. His research integrates sociological theory, critical methodology, and empirical studies of migration, race, and sexuality.
Education
- Ph.D., Sociology, University of Alberta (2019)
Research Interests
Karimi’s scholarship centers on the sociological analysis of migration and refugee experiences, with particular attention to race, ethnicity, and sexuality. He employs both the scientific method and genealogical approaches to interrogate how knowledge about migration is constructed and how migrants are racialized and integrated in host societies. His empirical work spans immigrant and refugee communities from the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe.
Recent Research Directions
His recent publications (2021–2023) advance critical debates in assimilation theory, transnationalism, and the racial boundaries of citizenship. Collectively, these works interrogate whether classical assimilation models adequately capture the experiences of contemporary migrants, especially those marked by racialized and sexual minority identities.
Awards and Fellowships

Public Engagement
Karimi actively translates his research for public audiences, including participation in the UBC Centre for Migration Studies podcast series and co-authoring policy-oriented op-eds with the CERC Migration and Integration network.
