Professor Nasar Meer is Professor of Sociology in the School of Social & Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow. He is Co-Investigator of the UKRI-funded project "The Impacts of the Pandemic on Ethnic and Racialized Groups in the UK" (2021-2023) and Principal Investigator of the Horizon-2020 project "Governance and Local Integration of Migrants and Europe's Refugees (GLIMER)". He has served as Commissioner on the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s Post-COVID-19 Futures Inquiry (2020-2021), member of the Scottish Government COVID-19 and Ethnicity Expert Reference Group, and Trustee of the British Sociological Association and Social Policy Association. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) and the UK Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS).
Research interests lie at the intersection of citizenship studies, race and ethnicity, migration, anti-discrimination policy, political participation, education policy, and media representation. His work also explores W. E. B. Du Bois’s concept of "double consciousness" and its relevance to identity and misrecognition, while consistently interrogating historical and contemporary patterns of racialization.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal an evolving focus on climate adaptation and racial vulnerability, housing governance and racialisation, FinTech in asylum seekers’ everyday lives, and critical engagements with race theory. These works collectively advance debates on social policy, migration governance, and the lived experiences of racialized minorities.
