Dr. Dogus Simsek serves as Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology within Kingston University's Department of Criminology, Politics and Sociology, School of Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences. His research examines social inequalities and migration through intersectional lenses of race, ethnicity, class, and gender, with critical focus on everyday bordering impacts on racialized minorities including refugees and undocumented migrants in the Global South.
His academic credentials include a PhD in Sociology from City, University of London; MA in Cultural Studies from Goldsmiths, University of London; and BA (First Class) in Media and Communication Systems from Istanbul Bilgi University. In 2024, he achieved Senior Fellow status with the UK Higher Education Academy.
Dr. Simsek's research program investigates transnational migration dynamics using ethnographic methods, notably through his Kingston University-funded 2022-23 project 'Remaking home in the face of racism' comparing London and Istanbul, and prior DVV-funded work on African migrants in Istanbul. His scholarship consistently centers racialization processes and structural inequalities in migration contexts.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals concentrated exploration of Syrian refugee integration in Turkey through class/race/neoliberalism frameworks, alongside critical examinations of pandemic impacts on undocumented migrants' mental health and refugee children's educational barriers. His work bridges theoretical rigor with policy-relevant insights.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Senior Fellow, Higher Education Academy, UK (2024)
- Fellow at IWM (Vienna) and Calcutta Research Group (Kolkata)
- Associated Senior Research Fellow at Boston Consortium for Arab Region Studies
- Associated Senior Research Fellow at Koc University's Migration Research Centre
Dr. Simsek supervises PhD candidates including Ali Kiresci and Robert Amato Lastman, welcoming students researching migration-displacement-race-class intersections. His externally funded projects include TUBITAK-supported research on Syrian refugees' labor market access and DVV-funded ethnography of African migrants in Istanbul churches/workplaces.
He maintains active international engagement through invited lectures at institutions including University of Edinburgh, ETH Zurich, and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, plus presentations for UNHCR, Oxfam, and IOM. His editorial service includes Ethnic and Racial Studies board membership and grant reviews for Austrian Science Fund and French National Research Agency.
