معرفی
Arwel Jones is a Research Fellow in the Department of Respiratory Research@Alfred within the School of Translational Medicine at Monash University, affiliated with Alfred Health. He is actively involved in research on exercise immunology, chronic respiratory diseases, and non-drug interventions for COPD and other lung conditions. He holds an honorary lecturer position at the University of Newcastle and is engaged with multiple professional respiratory societies.
- PhD in Sports Science, Aberystwyth University
- Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (PGCTHE)
- BSc (Hons) in Biology and Sports Science
- Fellow, Higher Education Academy
Dr. Jones's research focuses on the role of exercise as an immunomodulatory intervention in chronic lung disease, particularly COPD. His work explores how physical activity can reduce hospitalisations, improve immune responses to vaccination (including COVID-19), and serve as an adjuvant therapy. He also investigates physical inactivity in chronic lung disease and respiratory infection prevention in endurance athletes. His methodological expertise includes randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews for clinical guideline development.
The recent publications and projects highlight a strong trend in immune modulation through exercise, pulmonary rehabilitation delivery models, corticosteroid use, and vaccine response in high-risk populations. His work bridges translational medicine, immunology, and public health, often involving multidisciplinary collaborations across institutions in Australia and internationally.
Scientific Awards:
- ERS/ELF Best Abstract Grant for Healthy Lungs for Life (2021)
Dr. Jones is actively supervising PhD students and leading multiple research grants funded by lung charities and internal university sources. He plays a key role in community engagement through the Breathing Easier Together program and contributes to national and international guideline development via the American Thoracic Society, European Respiratory Society, and Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is also involved in educational initiatives and knowledge translation efforts.
He contributes to several research networks and collaborative groups, including the Allied Health Translational Research Network, the Centre for Research Excellence in Treatable Traits (CRETT), and the Vaccines & Immunization Working Group. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health and well-being through physical activity and equitable access to care.
