Arun Majumdar

Dr. Arun Majumdar serves as the inaugural Dean of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and holds the Jay Precourt Professorship at Stanford University. He is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Science & Engineering, and a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) at the Hoover Institution. His academic roles are complemented by leadership in national energy initiatives, including his tenure as Founding Director of ARPA-E and Acting Under Secretary of Energy under President Obama. He has also served in advisory capacities to multiple U.S. Secretaries of Energy and on boards of businesses and non-profits.

Dr. Majumdar earned his PhD from UC Berkeley in 1989 and held prior roles at UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and Arizona State University. His research focuses on nanoscale materials for energy conversion/storage, AI-driven climate solutions, and redox reaction systems. He co-founded Google's energy technology initiatives and contributed to global energy policy frameworks.

His research interests span sustainable energy technologies, nanotechnology, and climate solutions. Notable projects include developing photocatalytic methane oxidation systems, electrochemical refrigeration, and AI models for predicting atmospheric temperatures (e.g., TemperatureGAN). His work emphasizes bridging lab-scale innovations with large-scale societal impact.

Dr. Majumdar’s awards include membership in the U.S. National Academies of Sciences and Engineering. His advisory roles include chairing the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board and leading energy transition teams during presidential transitions. He directs the Magic Lab at SLAC and collaborates on projects like DeepSolar for solar adoption analysis.
