Arthur Stipanovic

Arthur Stipanovic is a Professor and former Chairman of the Chemistry Department at SUNY-ESF, where he earned his B.S. (1974) and Ph.D. (1979) in Polymer Chemistry. He directed the Analytical and Technical Service group (1998–2012) and served as Interim Co-Director of the CNY Biotechnology Accelerator (2010–2012). His research focuses on renewable biomass utilization for fuels, chemicals, and materials, emphasizing high-throughput analytical techniques, pretreatment technologies for biorefineries, and algal bio-oil production.

Education: B.S. and Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from SUNY-ESF (1974, 1979).

Research interests include: (1) Biodegradable polymers from woody biomass, (2) High-throughput analysis (NIR, NMR, TGA), (3) Electron beam and fungal pretreatment methods, (4) Hemicellulose valorization for composites, and (5) Algal bio-oil optimization using xylose from wood. His work bridges fundamental science and industrial implementation, with a focus on sustainability and scalable processes.

His articles address pretreatment strategies, microbial fermentation of lignocellulosic feedstocks, and genetic engineering for enhanced biofuel production. Key innovations include electron beam irradiation for biomass deconstruction and xylose-based polyester synthesis.

Collaborations include projects with Prof. Chris Nomura on genetically engineered organisms and with institutions like the CNY Biotechnology Accelerator to commercialize bio-based materials.
