Arthur Montalto

Dr. Arthur Montalto is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Justice Health Research Program within the School of Population Health at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). His work bridges neuroscience, mental health, and criminal justice system research with particular focus on marginalized populations.

His educational background includes:

• Ph.D. in Psychology from Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), University of New South Wales
• M.Sc. in Neuroscience from the University of Geneva, Switzerland
• B.Sc. in Biological and Environmental Sciences from Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Canada

Montalto's research investigates the neural correlates of cognitive function, resilience, and wellbeing using advanced structural and functional MRI techniques. His work particularly focuses on justice-involved individuals and older incarcerated populations, examining physical and cognitive health and frailty to inform evidence-based approaches for improving health screenings, outcomes, and rehabilitation. His methodological approach combines neuroimaging, data analytics, and public health research to understand the social, psychological, and biological factors shaping cognitive functioning and wellbeing.

His scientific contributions have been recognized through several awards including the 2022 HDR Completion Scholarship from UNSW and multiple grants from Neuroscience Research Australia. His publications span neuroscience, psychology, and public health domains with particular emphasis on twin studies exploring genetic and environmental influences on mental wellbeing.

Montalto actively contributes to significant research initiatives including the NHMRC-funded A-PLUS study ($2.9M) examining health trajectories of older people in prison and the ASCAPE project developing digital tools for health screening in correctional settings. He also serves on the UNSW Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC C) and contributes peer reviews for journals including Biological Psychiatry.
