Arthur Chapman is a Professor of History Education and Head of the Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy & Assessment at University College London’s IOE. He holds advanced degrees including an EdD, MPhil, MA (Cantab.), and PGCE. His research focuses on history pedagogy, curriculum design, and the intersection of history education with public discourse and contemporary culture. He has led international projects on topics like Holocaust education and countering conspiracy theories in schools.
Chapman serves as Editor-in-Chief of the History Education Research Journal and sits on global advisory bodies such as the Scientific Advisory Council of the Council of Europe’s Observatory on History Teaching in Europe. His work emphasizes narrative competence, historical interpretation, and inclusive curricula. Recent projects include leading the Pears Commission on Countering Conspiracy Theory in Schools (2024-2025) and contributing to UNESCO initiatives on antisemitism education.
He has authored over 50 scholarly articles addressing historical thinking, curriculum policy, and educational equity. Awards include Fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and the Historical Association. Chapman actively engages with teacher communities through workshops, conference keynotes, and social media, advocating for evidence-based history education practices.
