Aron Massey is an Assistant Professor of Geography at the College of Liberal and Creative Arts, West Liberty University. His academic work bridges political ecology, environmental degradation, and resource economics.
- PhD in Geography (in progress) at West Virginia University (anticipated 2019)
- MA in Geography from Kent State University (2004)
- BA in Geography from West Liberty State College (2002)
Massey specializes in qualitative research on mountaintop removal coal mining in southern West Virginia, focusing on anti-MTR activists' mobilization around geographic scale and political agency. He also investigates wine tourism development in North Carolina's Yadkin Valley, the Sago Mine disaster's remembrance, and Appalachian coal company towns' cultural legacy.
Beyond academia, Massey coordinates Social Studies Education at West Liberty University, advises student organizations (Chi Nu Fraternity, Gamma Theta Upsilon, Geography Club), and leads study abroad programs in Iceland and China. He is an award-winning homebrewer and home winemaker, teaching Geography of Wine courses and participating in local beer/wine festivals as a judge and educator.
