Arnold Tschira (1910–1969) was a German architectural historian and professor at TH Karlsruhe. He specialized in architectural history, medieval structures, and urban development. His career spanned academia, historical research, and post-war reconstruction.
Education & Early Career:
- Studied architecture at TH Karlsruhe (1929–1933), graduating with a diploma.
- Assistant at the Chair of Art and Architectural History under Karl Wulzinger (1935–1938).
- Received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) to study in Italy and Greece (1938/1939).
Research & Roles:
Tschira’s research focused on architectural history, including medieval urban structures, church architecture, and urban planning. He authored seminal works such as Orangeries and Greenhouses (1939) and co-edited studies on medieval Ettlingen (1968) and Schwarzach Abbey (1969). He served as a full professor at TH Karlsruhe (1950–1969) and chaired the Koldewey Society (1963 onward).
Legacy:
- Extensive work archive preserved for scholarly use.
- Contributions to post-war reconstruction in Freiburg and Karlsruhe.
