Karl Selg (1918–1981) was a renowned architect, urban planner, and academic. He served as Full Professor of Housing, Urban Development, and Design at Technische Hochschule Karlsruhe from 1965 until his death in 1981. Earlier roles included Associate Professor (1961–1965), honorary lecturer (1958–1961), and urban planning lecturer (1947–1949).
Education & Early Career:
- 1935–1937: Studies at State Technical College Karlsruhe
- 1940–1942: Architecture studies at TH Karlsruhe
- 1947: Promotion (PhD equivalent)
Research & Practice: Specialized in housing design, urban development, and post-war reconstruction. Notable projects include the Waldstadt Karlsruhe satellite town, Rheinhausen town center, and housing estates in Bonn and Cologne. Advocated for functionalist urbanism and socially oriented architecture.
Legacy: Left an extensive archive of ~4,000 plans and 11,000 photographs documenting his work. His designs emphasized community-oriented spatial planning and modular housing solutions.
