Arnold I. Barnett is the George Eastman Professor of Management Science and Professor of Statistics at MIT Sloan School of Management. His research focuses on applied mathematical modeling addressing health and safety issues, particularly aviation safety, homicide patterns, and election polling. He holds a BA in Mathematics from Columbia College and a PhD from MIT.
Notable honors include INFORMS President’s Award (1996), Expository Writing Award (2001), and Flight Safety Foundation’s 2002 President’s Citation. He was awarded the Jamieson Prize (2016) and a 2024 best paper award with Mohammad Fazel-Zarandi. MIT Sloan students honored him 14 times for outstanding teaching.
His work spans aviation safety trends, homicide rate analyses, and polling methodology critiques. Recent studies include airline safety improvements and pandemic-era crime spikes. Barnett frequently engages with media, publishing op-eds in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and The Hill.
