معرفی
Dr. Arno Hessels is a Clinical Researcher at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), affiliated with the Department of Radiation Oncology within the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen. He holds a PhD in Medicine from the University of Groningen (2019) and completed a Postgraduate Master in Epidemiology at Amsterdam UMC (2023). His research focuses on optimizing radiotherapy techniques, particularly proton therapy, and mitigating cardiopulmonary toxicities in thoracic cancer treatment. He leads projects such as CLARIFY (cardiopulmonary toxicity in thoracic cancer) and IMORT (immunotherapy integration with chemoradiation). His work bridges clinical oncology, radiation biology, and epidemiology, with a focus on improving patient outcomes through advanced radiotherapy strategies.
Education:
- PhD, University of Groningen (2015–2019): Focused on treatment outcomes in ANCA-associated vasculitis
- Master of Medicine (2013–2017), Bachelor of Medicine (2010–2013), both at University of Groningen
- Postgraduate Master in Epidemiology, Amsterdam UMC (2023)
Research Interests:
Dr. Hessels specializes in optimizing radiation therapy for thoracic malignancies, with a focus on reducing cardiopulmonary toxicity and enhancing treatment efficacy. His work includes evaluating proton therapy benefits, studying late effects of radiotherapy, and integrating immunotherapy with chemoradiation. He also investigates genetic factors influencing treatment outcomes in autoimmune diseases like ANCA-associated vasculitis.
Grants & Projects:
- CLARIFY: Dutch Cancer Society-funded study on cardiopulmonary toxicity after thoracic radiotherapy
- IMORT: University Medical Center Groningen-funded project exploring immunotherapy integration
- HyDose: Evaluating proton therapy dose escalation in non-small cell lung cancer
Labs/Teams: Active within the Department of Radiation Oncology at UMCG, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in oncology, radiobiology, and epidemiology.
