Dr. Arno Alpi is a Senior Lecturer in Molecular Genetics at the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Edinburgh. He previously held Group Leader positions at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (2016-2024), the Scottish Institute for Cell Signaling & MRC-PPU (2009-2016), and conducted postdoctoral research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (2004-2009). He earned a PhD in Cell Biology from LMU Munich (2004) and a Master's in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of Vienna (2000).
His research focuses on ubiquitin signaling pathways and their role in red blood cell development (erythropoiesis). Key areas include the proteostasis mechanisms governing erythrocyte differentiation, particularly the regulatory functions of the CTLH E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. His work combines proteomics, biochemistry, and cell biology to study metabolic rewiring and chromatin landscape changes during erythropoiesis.
Current studies investigate how CTLH E3 assemblies balance erythroid progenitor dormancy and terminal differentiation using in vitro models like erythroblastic islands. This research bridges fundamental cell biology with implications for hematological disorders and protein quality control.
No scientific awards or grants are explicitly listed in the provided text. He advises no students, though his group leadership roles suggest mentoring activities not detailed here.
