Professor Armand D'Angour is a Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Jesus College as a Fellow and Tutor. Previously a cellist and businessman, he transitioned to academia in 2000. His research focuses on Ancient Greek literature, music, and cultural studies, with notable projects including British Academy-funded work on ancient Greek music and a Vice Chancellor’s Prize-winning public engagement initiative. He co-edited Music, Text, and Culture in Ancient Greece (OUP 2018) and authored Socrates in Love (2019) and How to Innovate (2021).

Research explores intersections of ancient Greek literature, music, and cultural practices. Key areas include tragic chorus dynamics, musical semiotics in classical texts, and the application of ancient innovation principles to modern contexts. Recent publications analyze nonverbal behavior in Greek drama and the role of music in tragic performances.
He has supervised numerous doctoral researchers, including studies on Sophoclean pluralism, Aristophanes’ poetics, and Pindar’s performative poetry. Awards include British Academy Fellowship (2013–14) and recognition for public engagement (2017).
Labs/Teams: Collaborations with institutions like Oxford’s Classics department and public media platforms for cultural outreach projects. Current work includes digital reconstructions of ancient music and interdisciplinary studies on ancient Greek innovation.
