Dr. Arjuna Ratnayaka is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Biomedical Imaging Faculty and Department of Clinical Neurosciences. His research focuses on retinal degeneration, neurodegeneration, and Alzheimer’s-linked mechanisms, with a particular emphasis on Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and albinism. He holds a PhD from the University of Liverpool and has conducted postdoctoral research at King’s College London and the University of Sussex.
His work employs advanced techniques such as gene-editing, stem cells, and 3D imaging to study molecular mechanisms in senescent retinas and brains. Key projects include developing ex-vivo models of retinal degeneration and exploring therapeutic interventions using Sigma-2 receptor modulators. He collaborates with clinicians, industry partners, and global organizations like NC3Rs and Fight for Sight.
- Teaching: Supervises PhD students and mentors across multiple programs, including BMedSci Neuroscience.
- External Roles: Serves as Council Member for NC3Rs, Scientific Consultant to Pharma/SMEs, and peer-reviewer for UKRI and journals.
Dr. Ratnayaka’s lab develops innovative models like MacuSIM and investigates lysosomal dysfunction in RPE cells. His interdisciplinary approach bridges basic science, clinical research, and policy advocacy to combat blinding diseases and dementia.
