Aristotle Tympas is a Professor at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, School of Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. His interdisciplinary work bridges engineering, science policy, and the history-sociology of technology. He holds an MSc in Engineering (Aristotelio University, 1989), an MSc in Technology and Science Policy (Georgia Tech, 1995), and a PhD in History-Sociology of Technology (Georgia Tech, 2001).
- Past roles include Chair of the Tensions of Europe Research Network (2017–2019) and Department Chair (2020–2022).
- Currently serves as Vice President of the ESST International Master's Program, Director of the Science, Technology, Society Interdepartmental Graduate Program, and Vice-Chair of his department.
His research focuses on existential risks, long-term technological risks, and the historical evolution of technological systems. Notable works include Calculation and Computation in the Pre-electronic Era (Springer, 2017) and Analog Labor, Digital Capital (2018).
He has held visiting scholar positions at MIT (USA), Viadrina Center (Germany), and the Swedish Institute for Disability Research (Sweden). Recent activities include an STS Talk in Vienna (2025) on existential risks from the 19th to 21st century.
