Ariel Gu is an Assistant Professor in Behavioural Finance at the School of Economics, University of East Anglia, UK. She is a member of the Centre for Competition Policy and the Centre for Behavioral and Experimental Social Science (CBESS), where she serves as Research Lead for the Behavioral Finance cluster. She also coordinates the Research Seminar Series for the School of Economics.
- Ph.D. in Finance, Durham University, 2019
- Previous appointments: Durham University Business School, Newcastle Business School
Her research lies at the intersection of behavioural finance, applied econometrics, and experimental economics. She investigates how psychological factors and bounded rationality influence financial decision-making, particularly in mutual fund markets and consumer financial behavior. Using data-driven and interdisciplinary approaches, she develops models that incorporate heterogeneity in preferences, beliefs, and reactions to uncertainty. Her work bridges theoretical models of rational choice with observed behavior through empirical testing and experimental design.
The recent publications reflect a strong focus on prospect theory, mutual fund dynamics, and methodological innovations in econometric inference. Her research combines formal modeling with robust statistical techniques, often leveraging large-scale financial datasets and multiway clustering methods.
She is currently leading a British Academy-funded project titled 'Behind the Box: The Influence of Ambiguity Attitude on Consumer Preferences for Loot Boxes,' starting in 2025, which extends her work into behavioral responses to uncertain rewards in digital environments.
