Ariel Gu is an Assistant Professor in Behavioral Finance at the School of Economics, University of East Anglia (UK). He serves as Research Lead for the Behavioral Finance cluster at the Centre for Behavioral and Experimental Social Science (CBESS) and oversees the Research Seminar Series for the School of Economics. Previously, he held academic positions at Durham University Business School and Newcastle Business School, and earned his Ph.D. from Durham University in 2019.
Research Interests: Ariel specializes in Behavioral Finance and Applied Econometrics, with a focus on understanding how psychological and behavioral traits influence financial decision-making. His work bridges theoretical models of rational choice (e.g., expected utility) with observed behaviors that deviate from these benchmarks, incorporating bounded rationality, risk perception, and heterogeneity in preferences. Key areas include mutual fund performance, investor behavior under uncertainty, and econometric modeling of financial data.
The two most recent publications reflect a dual focus: Prospect theory and mutual fund flows (2021) explores behavioral explanations for investment flows using cumulative prospect theory, while Vcemway (2019) presents a computational tool for robust statistical inference in multiway clustered data—highlighting his interdisciplinary approach combining finance, psychology, and econometrics.
Administrative & Research Leadership:
- Research Lead, Behavioral Finance Cluster, CBESS
- Coordinator, Research Seminar Series, School of Economics
Current Project:
- Behind the Box: The Influence of Ambiguity Attitude on Consumer Preferences for Loot Boxes (British Academy, 2025–2027)
Ariel employs a data-driven, experimental methodology, integrating insights from cognitive psychology, experimental economics, and statistical modeling to analyze financial behavior in complex environments. His research aims to improve models of decision-making under risk and uncertainty, with applications in portfolio management and financial technology.
