Areum Jeong is an Assistant Professor of Korean Studies at Arizona State University (ASU) in the School of International Letters and Cultures. Her research focuses on Korean and Korean diasporic cinema, literature, popular culture, theatre, and performance, with a particular emphasis on activism and social movements. She holds a PhD in Theater and Performance Studies from UCLA, an MA in Performance Studies from NYU, and a BA in English Literature from Ewha W. University. Prior to ASU, she taught at institutions including UCLA, USC, and Ewha W. University. Her work examines performances addressing the Sewol ferry disaster and its impact on Korean society, as well as K-pop fandom and fan labor. She has published extensively in journals like Studies in Theatre and Performance and is the author of two monographs: Beyond the Sewol: Activist Theatre and Performance in South Korea and the Diaspora (2025) and K-Pop Fandom: Performing Deokhu from the 1990s to Today (2026). She has also contributed to media outlets such as The Atlantic and CNN.
