Professor Ardian Morina serves as Professor of Engineering Tribology at the University of Leeds' School of Mechanical Engineering, holding key leadership roles including Director of the Institute of Functional Surfaces and Deputy Pro-Dean International for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. His interdisciplinary work bridges academia and industry through initiatives like the Green Tribo-Vehicle Consortium with Malaysian universities.
Education:
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK
Research Focus: Morina pioneers advancements in tribology and surface engineering, developing novel materials/lubricants to reduce friction and wear in automotive and energy applications. His work spans engine/transmission systems tribology, tribochemistry of biofuels, DLC coatings, and bio-inspired anti-icing surfaces, utilizing techniques like Raman spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy.
Scientific Recognition:
- IMechE Donald Julius Groen award (2016)
- Willbur Deutsch Hunt Memorial Award, STLE (2014)
- Tribology Mission Day 2003 best presentation award
- Numerous best poster awards
Mentorship & Funding: With 28 completed PhD supervisions and 15 current doctoral researchers, Morina secures major grants from EPSRC, EU, and industry partners. His Malaysian-funded GTVC project develops palm fibre-based graphene lubricants to cut CO2 emissions, featuring joint publications and researcher exchanges.
Research Infrastructure: He leads the Institute of Functional Surfaces and Tribology Group while representing the UK on the International Tribology Council. His work integrates with the Bragg Centre for Materials Research and EPSRC Peer Review College.
