Ardi Echevarria is a musicologist and music theorist specializing in 19th-century musical form and Adorno-influenced musicological debates. He currently holds a Research Fellow role at Harvard University’s Department of Music while completing a PhD at Durham University, supported by the Northern Bridge Consortium and the Ramsay Centre. His research interrogates the New Formenlehre’s theoretical foundations, particularly its engagement with historical narratives and socio-political contexts.
Echevarria earned First Class Honours (2019) and a Master’s degree (2022) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he also taught undergraduate musicology. He has presented globally at institutions like the Royal Musical Association and the Society for Music Analysis, focusing on topics such as deformation theory, sonata failure, and Adorno’s philosophy of music. His work bridges theoretical rigor with critical historiography, challenging traditional analytical frameworks.
Professional service includes leadership roles: Chair of the Formal Theory Study Group, Student Representative for the Society for Music Analysis, Secretary of the Musicological Society of Australia’s Sydney chapter, and ECR Lead for Durham’s Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies. His awards include the Musicological Society of Australia’s Student Paper Award (2019) and multiple travel/research fellowships.
Recent publications explore Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll through Formenlehre, Beethoven/Schumann’s symphonic breakthroughs, and Adorno’s influence on music analysis. His research emphasizes the socio-political dimensions of theoretical debates, offering fresh perspectives on Romantic-era music’s structural and philosophical complexities.
