Aqil Shah is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Georgetown University's Edmund A Walsh School of Foreign Service, affiliated with the Center for Security Studies (CSS). He previously held positions at the University of Oklahoma, Dartmouth College, and Princeton University. His research focuses on political and security dynamics in South Asia, particularly governance challenges, democratic transitions, and military influence in states like Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Dr. Shah holds a PhD in Political Science from Columbia University and an M.Phil in International Development from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He has held fellowships at Harvard, Stanford, and the National Endowment for Democracy, and served as a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
His work bridges academia and policy, evidenced by his 2022-23 Council on Foreign Relations fellowship advising USAID and the World Bank on South Asian governance issues. His publications span International Security, Foreign Affairs, and Journal of Democracy, addressing topics like India-Pakistan nuclear dynamics, military-civilian relations in Pakistan, and Bangladesh's political deadlock.
