Aparna Venkatesan is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of San Francisco. Her research focuses on cosmology, cultural astronomy, and dark sky advocacy. She co-founded the Center for Space Environmentalism in 2025 and has led global initiatives to protect the space environment and preserve Indigenous knowledge systems. Venkatesan serves as past co-Chair of the American Astronomical Society's Committee for the Protection of Astronomy and the Space Environment (COMPASSE) and has advised NSF-funded initiatives promoting STEM equity.
Education: BA in Astronomy (Cornell University), MS and PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics (University of Chicago). Postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Research Interests: Cosmological studies of first stars and quasars; interdisciplinary dark sky advocacy addressing light pollution, satellite impacts, and Indigenous partnerships. Her work coined the term 'noctalgia' to describe 'sky grief' and has inspired global art, policy, and cultural projects.
Publications & Media: Over 15 peer-reviewed articles since 2020, including influential works on satellite constellations' environmental impacts and Indigenous-Lunar collaboration. Featured in Salon, BBC, Washington Post, and international podcasts.
Awards: 2024 Distinguished Research Award (USF), 2018 Cottrell Scholar, multiple teaching and diversity awards. Lead faculty in NSF-funded Undergraduate ALFALFA Team consortium.
Advocacy & Grants: Co-Director of the Tracy Seeley Center for Teaching Excellence (2022–2025). Secured three NSF grants ($ millions) for collaborative astrophysics research. Mentored 20+ undergraduates advancing to STEM careers.
Labs/Teams: Co-founded the Center for Space Environmentalism. Collaborates with global institutions like DARPA, the United Nations, and Indigenous communities on space policy and cultural preservation.
