Dr. Anya Arthurs is a Research Fellow in Cell and Molecular Biology at Flinders University's College of Medicine and Public Health and Full Member of the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute. She holds a PhD from the University of Newcastle (2019) and has established herself as a leading researcher in placental biology and non-coding RNA mechanisms.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Newcastle (2016-2019), a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours Class I) from the University of Newcastle (2015-2016), and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology from the University of Sydney (2011-2014).
Dr. Arthurs specializes in the molecular and cell biology of the placenta, with particular focus on how non-coding RNAs influence human development and disease, especially in reproductive health and placental ageing. Her technical expertise centers on generating patient-derived, genetically edited placental organoids—complex in vitro models that simulate development and disease processes. Her research aims to elucidate fundamental biological mechanisms while developing diagnostic tools to inform clinical decision-making and identify novel drug targets.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on placental organoid technology, non-coding RNA function in placental development, folate metabolism's impact on pregnancy outcomes, and computational tools for microRNA analysis. These works span molecular biology, reproductive medicine, nutritional science, and bioinformatics, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to understanding pregnancy complications and placental function.

Dr. Arthurs has secured substantial research funding totaling over $1.7 million in the past two years alone, including major grants from NHMRC and MRFF. Her work has been featured in prominent media outlets including Channel 7 News, The Conversation, and LiveScience.com. She maintains active collaborations with researchers across Australia and internationally, particularly in the areas of placental development and pregnancy complications. Her patient-derived placental organoid models represent cutting-edge methodology in reproductive biology research, offering new insights into pregnancy health and potential therapeutic interventions.
