Dr. Myriam Hemberger is a Professor at the University of Calgary with joint appointments in the Department of Medical Genetics and Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She leads research initiatives at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI), focusing on fundamental mechanisms of placental development.
Her research investigates:
- Developmental biology of placental formation
- Epigenetic regulation in pregnancy
- Stem cell differentiation and organoid modeling
- Pathogenesis of pregnancy complications
- Reproductive health and disease mechanisms
Dr. Hemberger's laboratory employs innovative 'organ-in-a-dish' stem cell technologies to model early human placental development—a research frontier that overcomes ethical constraints of studying actual embryos. Her work specifically targets the biological origins of pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and stillbirth, with translational goals in precision medicine for maternal and infant health.
At ACHRI, she develops cellular models to simulate critical developmental windows, providing unprecedented insights into placental disorders prevalent in high-risk pregnancies. Her research bridges developmental biology, clinical obstetrics, and regenerative medicine approaches.
