Dr. Andrew M Sharkey is a Lecturer at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Department of Pathology and the Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research. He serves as Director of Studies in Pre-clinical Medicine and teaches on the Part 2 course on implantation and early development in the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience.
- Education: BA in Natural Sciences (Biochemistry) from Cambridge, PhD from the University of Edinburgh.
Research Interests focus on female reproductive health, including embryo implantation, infertility causes/treatment, and early placental development. His work explores how maternal uterine NK cell KIR receptors interact with fetal trophoblast HLA-C ligands to influence pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction risks. He aims to develop predictive methods and clinical management strategies for these conditions.
Publications highlight collaborative work on decidual immune cell phenotypes, single-cell maternal-fetal interface models, and KIR/HLA-C genetic variability in pregnancy outcomes. His research integrates immunogenetics, placental organoids, and fetal programming to understand pregnancy pathologies.
Scientific Honors include the Roche Young Investigator Award and Meres Research Fellowship. He also contributes to histopathology practicals and reproductive sciences modules at Cambridge, with additional interests in African history and rowing.
